Veiled Obsession (His Agenda 1): A Gripping Psychological Thriller Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 797 ratings

**NOTE: This book contains dark themes, including violence of a sexual and physical nature that could trigger emotional distress in readers.**

“I cry for the man I used to know, the man I used to love…until his love killed mine.”

My name is Haley Macknight, and I’m dying inside. From the outside my life is every woman’s dream. I’m married to Jude Macknight, a sexy multimillionaire who loves me…too much.

Once upon a time, I loved him. But that love is dead. Unwilling to let me go, I’ve become his obsession. His heart is dark and damaged, and he will stop at nothing to make sure I remain in a marriage I no longer want, inside my gilded cage.

Each day I pull away from Jude, I watch him transform into a monster. Before my eyes, he becomes a man I don’t recognize, a dangerous man. He makes it clear that I belong to him, that my life is no longer my own. If I leave, he’ll kill me. But if I stay, I’ll die a slow death.

Review

"OMG!!! There are no words that can describe how excellent Veiled Obsession is.
This book is a romantic suspense thriller and a thriller it is (dark, twisted and yes a cliffhanger). In the opening we meet the main characters - Haley, beautiful and scared and Jude, dark, mysterious and downright evil.
Dori takes the reader on a dark and twisted journey leaving you breathless and wondering what the Hell...." -

I think I am still in shock I know Dori said we would be seeing her dark side but no way did I think when I picked up this book it would be this intense. I do have to warn whoever decides to read this there is a lot of graphic rape, and extreme abuse, etc if this a problem for you than this is not the book for you. I know I was not prepared when I pick this book up to read. Dori is a very talent author each of her series brings out a different side of her. Her writing style as changed and grown from her first book. I have loved each of her books and follow her closely. This new series is such a shock to me I set reading with my mouth hung open thinking OMG. I was so into it that before I knew it I had finish the book and it was 2 am. This serial unfolds over three volumes there is somewhat of a cliffhanger. It does end on a happy thought but I do have to wonder where the author will take this over the next 2 books.

Dori gives you many twists and turns with all the dark side out there I do find this believable however I am so glad I am not Haley. When your abuser closes you off from the rest of the world you become depended on them as Haley did. It is easy for them to control you in all things there is no easy way to leave when you have no money, friends and nowhere to go. I could relate to Haley there are so many women just like her out there. I am really hoping that their life isn’t this intense and they do not live through what she did.

Jude I adored him when he came on the scene it didn’t take long for me to hate him. I could relate to him since I have seen men just like him. They are all sweet until you say I do than over night they chance into an abusive male. For Jude it was when she innocently touch the hand of another male from there he just got out of hand. Be prepared for some major shocks as the story unfolds. I have to wonder if a man can get more evil than he already is. Knowing Dori I would have to say yes….

I thought it was great when Haley finally said enough and walked out until the author gave another twist to the story. As you read this when you think things can’t get worse they will, you will set with your mouth hung open more than once. Everywhere Haley turns she finds the cards are stacked against her. Her one bright lining turns out to be her worse nightmare. When Dustin comes on the scene we have to wonder if he will be the true bright light or will it end with another nightmare.

The author does have you hooked in a very short time. I did find the start of the book to be outstanding with some confusion right after that as to what Haley did that she needed to hide out. By the end of the first book you find out the answer but I have to wonder if she really did it or was this just away for Jude to control her. The author doesn’t go into details at this time but I feel sure as the next books comes out she will get more into the how and why. I do feel this is an outstanding read from a very dark side. I do have to say I am still in shock that Dori has these scenes running around in her head. Not to say that is a bad thing I am just still in so much shock. Her word flow is easy as she gives you a story you won’t be able to put down. She hooks you from the first line until the last. It will be interesting to see where she takes this and just who twisted her little mind really is.

For me this was a great read with that said I did have an issue with the confusion at the beginning which made me feel lost but Dori pulled it all together which made this a shocking good read. I will have to say the intense rapes and abuse hit a nerve. I think if I was Haley I would have gladly killed him and went to jail. You have been warned of the content so be prepared do not pick this book up if you can’t handle over the board (I do mean major overboard) rapes and abuse.

“Betray me again and you’ll see what I’m capable of.”

Books in His Agenda series should be read in order:
    Book 1: Veiled Obsession
    Book 2: Dangerous Intentions
    Book 3: Broken Illusions

Once upon a time in modern day a broken and lonely damsel, Haley finds herself rescued from a distressed situation that might have thrown her in a dungeon. Her Knight in shining armor, resort developer and real estate mogul Jude Macknight whisks her off to his kingdom.
“You’re broken, Haley. I can’t help but fix you. Let me fix you.”

Soon love blossoms and Knight Jude marries his damsel Haley in a fairytale wedding. But damsel Haley feels isolated and bored being tucked away in a castle and she starts to question whether it is love or rather obligation and gratuity.
    “Your love is suffocating me.”

Their happily-ever-after is threatened and Knight Jude becomes possessive, controlling, volatile, menacing and abusive blaming her for his outburst. Will they find the way back to each other’s hearts or forever be <b>lost to obsession?
“Jude Macknight, my knight in rusted armor”

    JUDE MACKNIGHT: 35 years/Mogul/Resort owner/RE developer/$$$$/Dark hair/Slate blue eyes.
This is where it gets tricky, because I like Jude Macknight. I am finding myself pining after a “beast” or is he merely a misunderstood Knight?

Eleven words to describe Jude: Commanding, nurturing, possessive, irrational, obsessive, controlling, demanding, complex, broken, volatile and ruthless.

    HALEY MACKNIGHT: 29 years/Trophy wife/Blond hair/Green eyes/
Seven words to describe Haley Macknight: Impressionable, wishy-washy, meek, indecisive, insecure, ungrateful and self-centered.

Veiled obsession, told from alternating POVs, has all the elements of a good tale, a knight and his damsel; the presence of good and evil; tragedy and hope; love and hate; yearning and rejection… (plus kink, abuse, murder and more!) It ends abruptly leading right to book 2, Dangerous Intentions for the continuation of their story.

Spell-binding story telling! Grimm plot! Swoon-worthy beast of a hero! Damsel in distress! Fairytale romance!
“And I don't have a conscience when it comes to punishing those who betray me.”

This story was was fun, but I was put off on the details.
In the same paragraph the heroine describes her eyes as green, only to be a chocolate brown a couple sentences later.
Again, s later in the story, she describes her herself in a sundress with her long wavy hair falling loose behind her, only to then describe her ponytail a few sentences later. These are only a few examples. Sadly, there were more.

Sorry, but I couldn't turn a blind eye to this. There is no reason the author should have done this.

Veiled Obsession (His Agenda Bk1) by Dori Lavelle
First of all Wow – What a read. Please be warned this is not for the faint at heart. It deals with situations of rape, abuse and torture. Your emotions will be running high with this one. Jude the powerful man helps Hayley, but at what price? Has she sold her soul to the Devil? What starts out as a wonderful love affair starts to un-ravel very quickly. You will be holding your breath. In the beginning, Jude will have won you over, at the end you will hate him. What happens when you have no one in your circle, no money, no job and isolation is what you do have? Can a man be so evil, can he get any worse? Be warned there are some plot twists that are intense. All I can say is that this author hooks you from the first page. Would I recommend this book – yes without a doubt, (but only if you can handle the dark content)

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a different story that will blow you away!? This one is for you!
Reviewed in Canada on June 5, 2015
I was really intrigued and I couldn't wait to read it. I received an ARC, but then I couldn't find it on my kindle app. So that was annoying.

I bought it so no worries ;D

Anyways, let's start with the actual book review shall we?

I read this in just a few hours so that really means a lot. I don't really know how to rate this book or how to describe how I felt throughout the whole story because in the beginning I was totally intrigued then scared, disgusted, scared, disgusted and so on.

In the beginning I didn't know how he can be such a bad guy because he was actually really nice and fine. The kissing scenes and how he treated her in the beginning got my heart beating so hard,

Then Haley realized that she married a total stranger and she's going to have to deal with it for the rest of her life. Jude's personality changed and I was totally disgusted by his acts. Totally DISGUSTED!

He's so cruel and I was literally scared. I really felt like I was in Haley's place and I was living with that monster. For the most part, I was disgusted and scared for Haley. I wanted to cry at some point because of how Jude was hurting her.

This was like a roller coaster ride.I felt all kinds of emotions. I've never read anything like this before.

You're probably wondering if I liked it or not... Well let me tell you this...

OF COUUUUUUUUUUUURSE I LOVED IT! Well, not Jude and definitely not the whole abuse theme, but the writing and the emotions it made me feel was pretty impressive. It's hard to write something and make readers feel connected to the story and the characters. So I'm pretty satisfied with Dori Lavelle's work and I can't wait for more!

There were some parts that went by a little too fast but then the change in the characters worked well and the story fell into place. The heroine is a little naive and stupid at times but the suspense in the book made up for it.

    Review also on iloveromanticfiction.com

Basic story: Hayley is the envy of women everywhere. She lives in a beautiful mansion, with a successful, handsome man. What more could she possibly ask for? The night Jude Macknight helped her escape a situation that could have gotten her put away forever, she thought she'd finally met her knight in shining armour. He tells her he will handle everything and she should forget all about her past. The closer they become, the more she feels she loves him.

Things are perfect for a while and Jude can't show her enough attention. Until she makes an innocent mistake. Then the real Jude Macknight shows his true colours. He's controlling, prone to fits of rage and determined to isolate her so that she relies solely on him. Hayley's love for him has died and she's resolved to leave. But Jude isn't used to being left and is clear that he won't let her go. Ever...

Why you should read it: I know this is a romance blog, but don't be fooled - this isn't a romance. It isn't dark romance - it's a thriller and damn good one at that. Hayley is amazing. She doesn't descend into one of those heroines with Stockholm syndrome, making excuses for Jude's volatile behaviour. You live the action with her and root for her completely. She never gives up and I can't wait to see how she evolves as a character going forward. Jude. What can I say about Jude? There is no danger of my falling for this 'hero'. Dude is cray-cray. I can't wait to see him get his comeuppance.

What you might hate: Ok - this is a survivor story. That means there is brutality, there is offensive language, there is rape and very, very uncomfortable scenes of violence. You've been warned. If this is not your bag, then for the love of God - don't go there! This is not a hero with control issues. He is not Christian Grey, there are no redeeming qualities. This is why I said this is not a romance. What it is is a gripping read. I really want to see where things will lead and whether Hayley will remain the strong heroine I like so much.

Rating: 4/5. This is a new author for me and I like her style of writing. She doesn't over-complicate, but weaves a story well. I cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy. Oh yeah, did I mention it was a trilogy?!

    Veiled Obsession is out now.
